The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) has re-elected its executive committee for another term, following the successful leadership of Dr. Charles Eguavoen. The decision was unanimously made during the association’s recent meeting, reflecting the members’ confidence in the returning team.
The newly elected executives include Dr. Charles Eguavoen as Chairman, Dr. Uwamarin Amadin as Vice Chairman, Dr. Sandra Okhiku as Secretary, Dr. Omorogbe Owie as Assistant Secretary, Dr. Ezeimo Onyinye as Treasurer, Dr. Blessing Gomina-Amune as Financial Secretary, Dr. Wellington Osadolor as Public Relations Officer, and Dr. Eseroghene Ihasuyi as Welfare Director.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Charles Eguavoen thanked members for their trust and support, urging continued collaboration to enhance optometric practice in Edo State. He emphasized the importance of eye health advocacy, particularly in tackling glaucoma, stating:
“World Glaucoma Week is March 9th to 15th, 2025, with the theme ‘Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.’ The Edo State Government can play a major role in combating this thief of sight by having regular screenings along with the management of glaucoma. These can only be achieved by the employment of more optometrists, who are primary eye care providers, in all local government areas across the state.”
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of Edo NOA, Dr. Uwamarin Amadin, who serves as the Chairperson for World Glaucoma Day, announced the commencement of a glaucoma awareness program. The initiative will begin on March 8, 2025, at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, featuring an aerobics session and glaucoma screening for doctors. She further stated that all optometric clinics in the state will be open during the campaign for free glaucoma screenings.
A key highlight of the meeting was the presentation of awards to distinguished senior optometrists in recognition of their contributions to the profession. The honourees were Prof. Bosede Olajire Ajayi, Prof. Efe Odjimogho, Dr. Mary Dele Osazuwa, and Prof. Eghosasere Iyamu.
The event underscored the association’s commitment to professional excellence and the advancement of eye care services in Edo State.
